Why it exists

Ohio stopped mailing free commercial study materials on October 2, 2023. Since then the manuals have come through OSU Extension at $8.50 for a PDF and $12.75 in print, per category. That is reasonable for a manual, but there is still no free practice exam anywhere for people who want to find out whether they are ready before they pay the exam fee and drive to a testing center.

Several county Extension pages tell applicators that practice exams are available. When you follow the links, there aren't any. This site is an attempt to fill that gap.

I built wateroperatorpracticetest.com first, for water and wastewater operators, for the same reason. It is the same idea applied to a different license.

Who runs it

My name is Albert Hupp. I build and maintain this site myself. It is not a company, and there is nobody else to route your question to, so if something here is wrong, write to me directly at albert@mypesticidelicense.com and I will fix it.

Where the questions come from

These are not real exam questions. Actual exam items are confidential, and anyone offering them to you is doing something they should not. Every question here is written from scratch against the published scope of the exam, drawing on the sources the exam itself is built from:

  • The EPA National Pesticide Applicator Certification Core Manual
  • Category-specific national manuals for aerial application, soil fumigation, rights-of-way and others
  • OSU Extension category study guides and Ohioline fact sheets
  • Ohio Revised Code Chapter 921 and Ohio Administrative Code 901:5-11
  • Current federal label and Worker Protection Standard requirements under 40 CFR

Every question carries a written explanation of why the correct answer is correct, because getting a question right for the wrong reason is not learning.

How they are checked

Multiple-choice questions fail in predictable ways, and most of those failures let a test-wise reader score well without knowing the material. Every bank on this site is measured against those failure modes before it is published, not eyeballed:

  • Answer position is balanced. If the correct answer sat in position C more often than chance, guessing C would beat studying.
  • The correct answer is not the longest one. The most common tell in a badly written test is that the right answer is the one with the qualifying clause attached. Every bank is checked for it and rewritten until it is gone.
  • No duplicate or near-duplicate options inside a question, which would quietly turn a four-choice item into a three-choice one.
  • No near-duplicate questions across a bank, so a 50-question test asks fifty things rather than forty.
  • Every question has a real explanation, not a restatement of the answer.

A bank that fails any of these does not go up until it is fixed. There are currently 34 banks covering every category Ohio licenses, commercial and private.

What it costs, and what happens to your data

Every test is free and always will be. You do not need an account to take one, and there is no paywall, no trial and no upsell.

An optional free account saves your scores and shows you which categories you are weakest in. That is the only reason to make one. The site uses Google Analytics to count visits, and carries no advertising as of today. Advertising may be added later to keep it free, and if it is, the privacy policy will say so before it happens. What will not change is that your email address and your scores are never sold or shared.

Corrections

If you find a question that is wrong, out of date, or unclear, tell me. Regulations change, category definitions get revised, and Ohio replaced two category exams in the last two years alone. Corrections are the most useful mail I get.
